Personal branding can be defined as setting out and promoting your value, your skills, and your experiences in a distinct public identity and doing this consistently. It is a representation of who you are, what you do, and what you stand for. There are many areas your brand carries through to including your social media presence, your website, your professional image both online and offline.
One other way artists are defining their brand is in their framing style which can become part of their artistic signature. A cohesive framing style creates a visual consistency that can make your work instantly identifiable and is often desired by artists showing in galleries, especially when showing a body of work together.
Consistency in framing can become a signature that collectors recognize and appreciate, creating a sense of unity across your portfolio.
Consistency could take a few different forms:
Always using the same frame style and colour
Using the same frame colour(s) but frame shape and size may alter depending on the piece
Always using the same frame shape but varying the colou
One artist I work with who does this brilliantly is Sally Stafford. I worked with Sally to find a frame style to suit the canvases she likes to work on then choosing a colour to hand paint the frames in which would work with her pieces.
Cohesion in your framing helps buyers and galleries see your work as unified, memorable, and professional. It’s an easy yet powerful way to strengthen your identity as an artist.
